The Fonoroff Collection

Movie critic, film historian and collector extraordinaire Paul Fonoroff spent over three decades finding, buying, enjoying, and storing Chinese film materials. In that time, Fonoroff filled two Hong Kong apartments with over 4,000 movie posters, over 10,000 magazine issues, over 20,000 lobby cards and even thousands of Mao buttons, among many, many, many other treasures. “Even if it’s a boring thing, if you have a thousand of them it becomes interesting when you see them all together,” Fonoroff explains. The C. V. Starr East Asian Library and the College of Letters and Science at UC Berkeley acquired the materials in 2015, and have now made them available to scholars worldwide. Read the news release.
