Big year in small bites

If all of our milestones were morsels, we’d have enough for a buffet. Instead, we are serving up a few bite-sized facts, a sampling of some of the Library’s many offerings. Together, these tasty tidbits emphasize our commitment to supporting the teaching and learning at Berkeley, and feeding the minds of students and scholars around the world. Here are some of the Library’s statistics and successes for you to savor.

Visits to Moffitt Library

Moffitt Library, the ever-popular hub for undergraduates, reopened in time for the fall semester after an eight-month closure for seismic upgrades. This year, Moffitt received more than a million visits, including 8,310 visits on May 6, its busiest day.

Images scanned

The Library continued to digitize its world-class treasures, scanning nearly 2 million images this year — 1,573,934 in-house and 248,083 with the help of vendors. The Library added 47 collections to its Digital Collections portal, making its materials available to an even wider audience.

Volumes in the Library’s collections

The Library finished the year with more than 14 million volumes in its collections, including 3,378,859 e-books.

Enrollments in classes served by e-reserves

During the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters, classes enrolling more than 50,000 students and spanning 99 departments benefited from a program that provides students with free digital versions of course materials.

Student workers

With nearly 700 students in its workforce, the Library remained one of the campus’s leading employers of students. They helped host events, create social media posts, preserve and digitize materials, and more.

More than 20,000 participants took advantage of Library instruction. The Library also provided 31,398 reference consultations, with 6,111 originating on its online 24/7 chat service.

This year, the Library bought print materials in 100 non-English languages, making up nearly 60 percent of all the physical items purchased.

The newly redesigned website racked up more than 3 million pageviews, and ended the fiscal year with a score of 97.3 (out of 100), according to a tool that measures web accessibility.

The Library notched well over 200,000 checkouts of its physical materials, the most at any campus in the University of California system.
