Spirituality and lived experiences: Afrofuturism

A black-and-white illustration on white paper. The illustration is of two faces looking away from each other in a mirror image with a beam of light from their forehead. Stars are overhead and a pyramid is underneath with a futuristic city landscape.

Pasted on the interior cover of a scrapbook, this flyer from Woman in the Moon Publications, the feminist press founded by Bogus in 1979, incorporates an aesthetic and vision of Afrofuturism, described by scholar and futurist Ytasha L. Womack as “an intersection of imagination, technology, the future, and liberation.” The press — which published books on topics in women’s studies, health, and spirituality — ceased operations in 1999.
